Nautilus-share - "A nautilus extension to easily share folders through Samba without root access," I believe this is already installed in the Main Edition This allows you to access your file server without the need of the file server to have any keyboard or mouse or monitor attached to it, as long as it has access to your network X11vnc - super easy VNC server that provides access to current desktop on file server (assuming you are using a GUI). Samba - package that allows Linux/Unix systems to share files with Microsoft based systems For the file server:Ħ4-bit Linux Mint 11 Main Edition - easiest distro for setting up samba shares IMHO My primary laptop needed UltraVNC installed to access the file server once it was headless. The hardware: The current network consists of a variety of different flavors of windows on family computers and laptops all at one physical location using an ASUS rt-n16 router upgraded with Tomato FW v1.28. Nothing too fancy at allĥ) I didn't use a wireless card on the server in the interest of network speed (the router pushes GigE for our network) but that was just a personal preferenceĦ) I assume users will utilize other How Tos to get make sure they are able to install the OS and connect to their networks and the Internet itself securely Implicit Givens: Just so we're all on the same boat here are some expectations and limitations for this project to keep it in scope:ġ) This is not intended to be a production ready server open to the rest of the Internet - it's just a home file and media server within my family's networkĢ) No extra effort was put into securing the network or computers outside of the defaults on installation.ģ) No personal data or confidential info is housed on the file serverĤ) My primary file types are mp3s, jpgs, and the occasional AVI or MPG.
